17 July 1904

Camogie is first played in public

On 17 July 1904, camogie was played in public for the first time, at the Royal Meath Agricultural Society Grounds in Navan, which later became the site of the GAA stadium Páirc Tailteann. The game was between two Dublin clubs, Keatings and Cúchulainns, and ended with a victory for Keatings, one score to nothing.

The rules of camogie largely came from university student Máire Ní Chinnéide, who would become the first President of the Camogie Association, founded in 1905. Though the game is similar to hurling, there are some small differences to make it less physical, such as the use of a lighter sliothar (ball), and the fact that shouldering is not allowed.

In 2004, the centenary of the first game was celebrated in Croke Park. Speaking at the event, John O’Donoghue, Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism, said: ‘I am sure that those pioneers who organised the first public game of camogie in Páirc Tailteann between Craobh A’Cheithnnigh and Cuchullains in 1904 would be delighted with the way camogie has grown to become one of the most popular and widely played female sports in Ireland with approximately 84,000 players. I would like to pay tribute to those pioneers for introducing a wonderful sport to the multitudes of Irish women who have graced the fields and stadiums of Ireland throughout the last 100 years.’

President of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael Miriam O’Callaghan noted that the association predated women’s suffrage: ‘Reaching a centenary is a significant achievement by any standards but reaching it in such a healthy and vibrant state is more than significant. Since 1904 our game has grown beyond the expectations of its founders.’
